Recent Trips Puerto Rico A week on the "Isle of Enchantment." Took the ferry from Fajardo to the island of Vieques, toured the island. Spent one night at Baños de Coamo, where there are 110-degree mineral hot springs that feed into a beautiful pool where you can soak in the healing waters. Visited the Arecibo Observatory, the world's largest radio astronomy telescope, with an antenna 1000 feet in diameter, as wide as a cruise ship is long! Pretty awesome. Panama Canal Traveling on Carnival's new superliner Legend, we marveled as we watched huge ships navigating the locks in the Panama Canal. We learned that the tolls paid by the largest ships are over $200,000, but this fee is only 5% of the only alternative: spending 22 days circumnavigating South America. In Limón, Costa Rica, we took a bicycle ride in the jungle, surrounded by howler monkeys, sloths and tropical birds. Belize has the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world (second only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef). Many of us went snorkeling or toured the Mayan ruins at Xunantunich, only 2 miles from the Guatemala border. Western Caribbean After spending an exciting day in Cozumel, Mexico, we traveled to Grand Cayman, where the big thrill was snorkeling with huge sting rays, some of them more than 4 feet across! They are practically as tame as kittens, and were eating out of our hands. Then it was on to Jamaica, where we cooled off climbing Dunn's River Falls and going horseback riding bareback in the ocean! Alaska! Our group of intrepid travelers enjoyed a wonderful week in the Great Land aboard the Carnival Spirit. What wildlife we saw! Killer whales, humpback whales, bears, mountain goats, eagles, porpoises, harbor seals and much more. Some in our group took the whale-watching excursion and saw a huge pod of about 50 killer whales! Others of us took helicopter flights over the glaciers and the Juneau icefield, an experience beyond words! We landed on the glacier, strapped on crampons and learned to scale a glacier! And the succulent lobster, not to mention the scallops, shrimp, veal, roast duck and fabulous desserts! Since we timed our trip to coincide with the end of the Alaska cruise season, most of the shopping in the ports was 50% off. Talk about bargains! New Cruises Cruise for a Cure: Please note that because the Glory is going to be in drydock in January, we have switched this departure to the Carnival Miracle.
